Mission Statement:
To maintain a network of water and sewer pipes and facilities to ensure the safe distribution of the Town's water and collection and discharge of the Town’s wastewater.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Water and Sewer Division staff maintains the entire water and sewer system network and insures the safe and proper distribution of the Town's water and discharge of the Town’s wastewater. The majority of the system’s build-out is currently under construction with three (3) additional phases to be completed by 2010 exclusive of roadway paving. Since 2004, numerous pump stations and miles of forced and gravity main and lateral services have been added. Once complete the system will have more than tripled in size, adding a significant work load to current staff levels. Tewksbury’s wastewater is conveyed to the Lowell Treatment facility by two (2) interceptors.
Pumping stations are maintained on a regular basis and grinder pumps when needed. Staff flush mains to reduce the number of backups and respond to assist residents when back ups occur, identifying the problem and making repairs as needed to the Town’s system. Collection system testing is carried out to continue efforts to remove inflow and infiltration (I and I) from entering the system. To minimize contamination of heavy metals, the staff has established a pretreatment program with industrial users to expel industrial wastes before entering the Town’s system. Pretreatment inspections are conducted biannually.
