What's New? Ames Hill Renovation Project Completed.
The Ames Hill Storage Tanks project has been completed on time and under budget.
The following items were addressed and completed:
- All cracks were sealed using 8,000 PSI urethane injection system
- New overflow pipes installed
- New risers added to upgrade the old manhole covers
- New security hoods installed with intrusion alarm system
- New overhead camera added to patrol the tank area
- New Ultrasonic water level indicators were installed
- Security fence and bargate installed
- Road surface re-leveled and compacted
- Drainage hydrants added to allow easier tank cleaning in the future
- Removed 12" of soil on top of tank(s) and installed drainage system
- Entire area re-landscaped
Multiple inspections of the storage tanks indicated that the conrete was in very good shape. Only one small piece (1' x1') of concrete was required to be replaced throughout the whole project out of the roughly 75,000 square feet of concrete surface. The curved arch columns which are used to support the roof of the structure are unique in that the construction method is no longer used due to the intense labor requirement.
The storage tanks are now ready for another 60 years of use.

Mission Statement:
Our mission is to provide the highest quality drinking water in sufficient quantites to meet the Towns needs and demand.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Town of Tewksbury’s water system includes a water treatment plant, which has a capacity to treat up to 7 million gallons a day of water and operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. This six (6) acre facility is located on the banks of the Merrimack River which is also the source of raw water for the Town. There are two (2) pressure boosting station(s) and three (3) storage tanks with a total storage capacity of 7 million gallons. The distribution system also contains thousands of line gates, hydrants, and over 150 miles of water mains and water service lines used to convey potable water to over 10,000 residential and commercial facilities. The Town’s staff is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining all components of the water system and for meeting all of DEP and EPA regulations concerning water
quality. Residential customers are billed bi-annually and Commercial accounts on a quarterly basis. The water consumption is also used to determine the customer’s sewer charge.
Operation and maintenance activities of the water system are delegated between the Water Treatment staff and the Distribution staff. The Water Treatment staff oversees the provision of quality water, repair water pumping equipment, maintain system hydraulics and perform backflow inspections, handles consumer complaints and test water at regular intervals for in process monitoring and DEP requirements. Testing samples are collected from 12 designated locations and are tested weekly for Total Coliform and E-coli bacteria in compliance with the strict Drinking Water Regulations of Massachusetts and the Safe Drinking Water Act. Additional testing is performed on a schedule designated by DEP on daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. Distribution staff read approximately 10,000 water meters twice annually, provide final readings for
home purchases, repair and replace meters, maintain and repair the entire water system piping network with all associated valve and shut-offs, and approximately 2500 fire hydrants. Distribution staff work also assist with sewer collection system maintenance.
The system operates as an enterprise fund. This means that water fees charged to customers are used to cover all operating and capital expenses.
