Tewksbury Municipal Sewer Project
At the Special Town
Meeting on October 1, 2002, the voters approved long-term funding of a
sewer expansion project that will eventually bring sewer service to
the entire town. The project is ambitious, and is expected to be
complete by the end of 2010. The cost will be covered through a
combination of a one-time $3,000.00 availability charge, and user
rates that will be placed in a dedicated fund to cover the expansion
costs. Residents should note that funding must still be approved
yearly at the Annual Town Meeting, and must be vigilant to ensure that
this occurs by attending Town Meeting.

Sewer Calendar
During 2008, there will be as many as 7
sewer contracts in progress at any given time. The link below is a calendar for all 12 months of 2008.
Each contract item is in a different color to assist in keeping track.
PLEASE remember this is a proposed calendar for planning purposes.
Delays occur in construction very often. This calendar will be updated
as often as possible to take into consideration these changes.
Construction Phases
The project is
divided into several Phases (6 through 11), with most phases being
divided into several contracts.
Maps showing the
location of each phase are available for view at Town Hall and in the
Engineering and Board of Health Offices at the DPW Building as well as
by clicking below.

phases remaining throughout town. This is a large map and may be slow

Trash pick up during Construction.
Beginning August 1st, 2006, BFI will be picking up residential trash in
Tewksbury on Wednesdays only. The entire town will be done in one day.
(The only exception to this is when there is a Monday holiday, in
which case the entire town will be picked up on Thursdays.)
When your street is having sewer installed, you will need to have your
trash out before 7 am. We are coordinating with BFI on the street
scheduling. The contractor will hold off work until BFI has gone in
and picked up. Then BFI will continue on with the rest of town and the
contractor will continue with the pipe installation. It will probably
be easiest if you put your trash out the night before, while
construction is going on in your street.
How much will connecting to the sewer cost
you?
(This applies to streets that are getting sewer in upcoming phases;
streets with sewer existing would be a little different.)
As your street gets a sewer main installed, a "stub" will be put in to
access each home/building. The location of this stub will be kept in
the DPW office on Whipple Road. At the time the sewer is accepted by the Town, a betterment fee of $3000 will be assessed through the water
billing department. This dollar value was approved at the October 2002
Town meeting.
It is the responsibility of each homeowner/building owner to
coordinate the connection to the main. This must be done by a licensed
drain layer on the approved list of drain layers. The drain layers list is
available
here or at the
Community Development office.
Click here for the sewer connection application
and sewer plumbing application.
A list of steps that will need to be completed is
available here.
A copy of handouts at a Public Meeting on connection procedures can be
read here.
The cost that each contractor charges is an individual business
transaction between the homeowner and the contractor. This is not a
Town transaction. As such, we do not keep records of what the charges
are.
When choosing a contractor from the approved list, please remember
there are many variables between jobs. The linear length of pipe, the
depth of the trench, and the soil type in your yard are just some of
the variables that could make your estimate be different than your
neighbor's. Always be a wise consumer.
