Engineering Responsibilities

The engineering division provides analytical analyses and design, develops plans and specifications, estimates, management, coordination and construction support for the Department of Public Works. This includes the utilities, water and sewer, as well as stormwater, drainage and roadway design.

All water, sewer and gas services as well as driveway installations are inspected and approved onsite by the engineering staff. In addition, the Drain layers, are approved and licensed by the engineering division.

The engineering division works closely with other Town departments to assist with planning and conservation review as well as traffic management. They provide technical support to Town Counsel for miscellaneous legalities. In addition, the GIS mapping is created and updated by the engineering personnel.

The office is extensively involved with the Sewer Expansion project. This year Phase’s 9, 10, and 11 have been active in construction.  The schedule is still on tract to have all sewer pipe in the ground by 2010.

In the locations where the sewer utility is available to the public, engineering issued permits to construct, repair, extend or connect to the municipal system per approved plans. The Community Development Permit Technicians track all permit documentation. A total of approximately 400 sewer connection permits were issues this year.

Issue permits to construct, repair, extend or connect to the municipal sanitary sewer system per approved plans. The required permit will only be issued to an individual who is officially approved by the Town.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

The Town of Tewksbury has continued to work on the ongoing GIS Program. On April and November 2008, the Massachusetts Highway Department (MassHighway) and Pictometry Inc. respectively, organized and performed a low altitude flyover of the Town's geographical territory. This flyover constituted of high-resolution ortho-photography (straight-down pictures) and oblique images (side views), which will be of immense help for the Town of Tewksbury for continuing its GIS efforts. This will allow the GIS Program to continue updating old data and develop new layers for the use of various of the Towns departments.

At this time the Town is actively seeking to make all of this data available to its employees and at some point in the future, to the general public.

Please check back later for more updates on the Town of Tewksbury's GIS Program.

Stormwater Regulations

The Engineering Department coordinates all Stormwater compliance with State and Federal regulations. This includes developing regulations, performing inspections and reviewing project proposals. For more information on the Town's Stormwater Management Plan, click here.

If you are wondering what is stormwater and how do I relate to this, please click on the Stormwater Matters Public Awareness Ad to learn more.

If you happen to see any suspicious and possible illegal dumping into our catch basins, streams and rivers, please report the activity here! We appreciate the community help in keeping our water clean.
