The Public Works Department is responsible for all endeavors
relating to planning, designing, operating, maintaining, and
managing public ways, water filtration plant, public water
distribution systems, sewer collection systems, shade trees, fleet
maintenance and snow and ice operation. The Department also provides
motor equipment maintenance services to all town departments except
Fire and limited level of maintenance and repair for town owned
facilities. The goal of the Department is to provide efficient,
effective, and economical services to the citizens of the Town at
the desired level and in compliance with all applicable laws and
regulations.
The goals of the Administration is to provide continuous
coordination and control of all divisions of Public Works through
effective leadership and to ensure that all functions of the Public
Works program are carried out completely and efficiently. These
responsibilities are accomplished under the direction of Brian M. Gilbert,
P.E., Superintendent of Public Works with the assistance of the
administrative office staff of Linda Monahan, Executive Secretary
and Sue Patterson, Head Account Clerk and five division supervisors
of Highway, Water & Sewer, Water Treatment Plant, Forestry, and
Fleet Maintenance
The specific functions of Administration are budget development
and internal expenditure control, clerical and accounting activities
for the processing of payrolls, purchasing, billings, short and
long-range planning,
compilation of estimates and
preparation of bidding documents, administration and oversight of
major contraction activity, maintaining public record files of the
DPW, responding to correspondence from residents and others on
Public Works matters, administration of Street and Sidewalk opening
and Physical Alterations permits, review and approval of all
proposed new construction with respect to items affecting public
works the such as roads, drainage, sidewalks, etc.; and many other
tasks both routine and nonroutine,
DPW Staff ensures the Town's compliance with all federal, state,
and local laws and regulations. The DPW trains, motivates, and
directs personnel to perform all program activities, interface with
the Town Manager, boards, commissions, and departments, as well as
with municipal, regional authorities State and Federal agencies.
Public Works staff is available at this number to take calls
regarding requests for recycling bins and service requests, Logging
all inquiries for dissemination to the appropriate division for
